When the first Central High School opened in 1838, the facility housed sixty-three students and a faculty of four professors. The building was located at South Juniper and Market Streets. The school moved into larger facilities located at Broad & Green Streets in 1854. "The authority of CHS moved the school system in a bureaucratic direction. Drawing on its informal market-based powers, the high school played a free-wheeling entrepreneurial role within the school system which ultimately led...to conflict with the formally delegated authority of the Superintendent in the developing bureaucratic structure" (Labaree, 76) (Photo, Central High School Handbook, 1938-1940)
