CHS was growing in population, hence the need for annex buildings throughout the city. This building served (across from the newly constructed third facility at Broad Street & Green on the southeast corner) as the facility for the Central Manual Training School, which was "organized in 1885 and was a three-year program in manual training and was the city's first alternative public secondary school for boys- ending Central's fifty-year reign as the only school of its kind" (Labaree, 76). "CHS, CMTS and Girls' Normal School all had parity in terms of entrance and graduation requirements"(Labaree, 78). It was at the time of the relocation to the Ogontz & Olney Avenues campus that the non-academic and vocational components of the curriculum went to the new Benjamin Franklin High School, Dobbins, Bok and other facilities. CHS became exclusively academic and college preparatory beginning in 1939. Photo taken November 24, 1914)(Photo courtesy of www.phillyhistory.org)
