Carl is best known as a member of the Berkeley String Quartet; he played guitar, autoharp and assorted home-made rhythm instruments;Carl is seen to the extreme left of the photo; the group is shown performing on the steps of Sproul Hall at Berkeley; the BSQ was interested in traditional American music; all were classically trained with city background, but what they played was something unclassifiable which they called "the Berkeley String Quartet"sound; "instruments such as guitars, banjos, autoharp, a washtub bass, harmonicas, kazoos and odds and ends like washboards, stovepipes and salad spoons" were featured in their repertoire of traditional American songs and tunes through popular songs of the twenties and thirties to contemporary folk and topical songs. The group played to audiences in the San Francisco Bay Area coffeehouses. Several albums of note came as a result of their musicality.
