The Eastern State Penitentiary was constructed in the configuration of a wagon wheel and opened in about 1830, was considered to be state-of-the-art for its time, and housed prisoners until its closing in the early 1970's. Al Capone was one of its notable inhabitants, having been arrested in Philadelphia in 1929 on a gun-carrying charge. The prison hosts programs for Halloween, Christmas and Bastille Day (July 14th).
