A dated photo, but clearly showing the details of this massive 350-ton, 70 ft. steam locomotive on permanent display at the Franklin Institute. I climbed the yellow ladder into the engine cab as a kid, but now there is a circuitous ramp for the less daring. This leviathan of a steam engine actually moves (by a series of electrically-powered pulleys and winches) about ten feet back and forth, but, alas, there is neither smoke nor whistle! Fabricated by Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia in the 1920's- they don't make them like this anymore! |
