Beautiful, don't you think? An outstanding example of modern architectural design for its time. Note the terrace and the sloping lawn with its dual set of steps. The illustration depicts the east side of the building- the Ogontz Avenue side- with the Auditorium prominently in view. "Central could never be just another high school simply because it had for so long operated in lonely splendor. Prospective students, parents, faculty, employers, and college-admission officers all knew that Central was old and academically demanding- a special school whose credentials would always carry extra weight. Thus even when Central was a comprehensive regional high school during the 1920s, tradition made it first among equals". (Labaree, 91) October 11, 1937.(Photo courtesy of www.phillyhistory.org)
